A lot of people take their eyesight for granted, some don’t even get to visit an eye specialist their whole life! For some, there is no option but to see one because they start to experience eye problems at an early age. Blurry vision, for instance, is a common problem for people who have diabetes and this is a condition that requires the services of an eye specialist.

The Eye Specialists – What Can They Do?

Ophthalmologists are considered as medical doctors. They are the ones that specialize in the examination, diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases and surgery. Seeing eye specialists regularly is highly recommended because you can keep track of your eyes’ condition. This is also one of the best ways to take care of these sensitive organs.

Eye specialists also recommend the foods and supplements that you can include in your diet. Right now, a very popular ingredient in supplements is lutein. This is especially made for individuals that are not able to reach their required daily intake for healthier eyes. So, if you love your eyes, you could ask your eye specialist about this. Ask also what greens and other leafy veggies you need to eat in order to keep your eyes healthy.

Apart from food, the best eye specialists will also recommend that you regularly exercise your eyes. Eye exercises can greatly reduce eye strain.

An optometrist, on the other hand, is also categorized as a doctor but of optometry. He didn’t attend medical school but he was trained to examine both the internal and external parts of your eyes. Between the ophthalmologist and the optometrist, only the former is able (and licensed) to perform eye surgeries. Optometrists, however, are the ones that can treat vision problems such as astigmatism, nearsightedness or farsightedness.

Requirements on Becoming an Eye Specialist

When you choose an eye specialist, make sure to check on these requirements and whether your doctor has fulfilled them. A good doctor should proudly show all of his scholastic accomplishments.

He should have taken several science and biology courses during his high school years.
As an ophthalmologist, you will need to have post-high school education by earning a Bachelor’s degree. He should have enrolled in any pre-med course after graduation and should have passed the MCAT or the Medical College Admission Test during his junior year in college.

You will need intensive eye specialist training in order to become an ophthalmologist. The last two years of your training should be centered on clinical practice.
To become an optometrist, you can take admissions exam on your second or third year in college then apply for optometry admission in different colleges and universities. Complete your 4-year course and then obtain a license – anyone who has gone through all these can start practicing as an optometrist.

When you are out considering an eye clinic, there are a number of aspects to consider which go beyond the most common concern – money. When you want to have vision corrective procedures done, such as refractive lens surgery or cataract removal, it is imperative that you choose doctors that are equipped with ample knowledge and also clinics that can support such services.

Here’s a checklist of the things that you need to consider when choosing the right eye clinic –

Look for expert doctors and staff: This should be at the top of your checklist because you need quality medical and surgical personnel in an eye clinic. After all, these are the very people that will look after you and they are also the ones that will diagnose your eye concerns and eventually recommend procedures or treatments that need to be done.

You can ask around for recommendations from your closest friends and relatives. They might already have a handful of eye clinics to recommend. You could also go online and find genuine reviews about different eye clinics.

Check the facilities and equipment: This is an obvious part of your checklist. Check the rooms, make sure that they are extremely clean (if not antiseptic). There should also be ample space and comfort. The equipment should be high tech, meaning, they are the latest in equipment technology. For example, digital photography is now being used to look at the inside of a human eye. So when you’ve been told that surgery is the best treatment for you, then you should ask whether they offer this option at the eye clinic.

Check for after care facilities and services: Your chosen clinic should schedule two post-op visits within 24 hours of the eye surgery. Two or more visits are recommended if the doctors need to check on nerve endings. Remember that after care is as important as the treatment or procedure itself.

Evaluate the cost of the procedure or treatment: Running eye clinics is a business but keep in mind that there are still ethical practices that need to be followed. There are some clinics that will offer matchless prices but these special offers tend to come with limitations elsewhere. There might be tempting offers but always look at the bigger picture.

A summary: It is important to consider each of the aspects that are on this checklist. Treatments that are done for eye conditions such as cataracts or myopia are sensitive procedures so you’ve got to make sure that everything is in order before you make your final choice. The eye is a sensitive organ so make take every necessary step to ascertain that you land only with the best eye clinic.

Are you thinking of embarking into a career that’s uncommon and has a good compensation package? You may want to try an optician’s job, but before you do so, you need to fully comprehend the average optician salary. That great news is that most opticians are paid well but these salaries can vary depending on their current position and existing responsibilities.

Wage Computations for an Optician

An optician can be paid by the hour or on salary. This depends on the company that the optician is working for. The average optician salary in the U.S. is $43,000 per annum but this can also range from $30,000 (for incoming opticians) up to $50,000 (for expert opticians). The hourly wage range is at $8-$15 per hour.

Benefit Package for Opticians

Optician benefits are quite good because they enjoy the following –

Health care
Paid sick leaves
Paid holidays
Retirement benefits

There are even opticians who can earn commissions by attaining big sales. Optician salary varies depending on the following factors –

Location – the more urbanized an area is, the higher the salary is. Rural area salaries often reflect the cost of living, therefore, optometrists in New York can be paid as much as $60,000 every year.
Education – just like any profession, the salary of an optometrist increases as his trainings pile up. An optician will climb to the top of the ranks after studying and getting certified. Formal education from community colleges or universities can guarantee a good compensation package from the onset.

There are now 22 states that require opticians to get certification through classes and examinations with The American Board of Examiners.

Experience – an optician that has worked for five years will definitely earn more than those who are just starting their career. More years on the job generally means better understanding of tools, service and policies. The optician is also expected to be more effective at work due to his years of experience. With this expertise comes salary raise.
Industry – there are many ways that an optician can work. He can work with optometrists and ophthalmologists by providing quality glasses and contact lenses for customers.

An optician who chooses to further his education and training can work on artificial eyes. You can also find opticians working in health stores, department stores, and optometrists’ offices. If you want to venture into your own business, then there are a lot of entrepreneurial activities for those who are ready to open their own optical shop. Keep in mind that those who work in offices are generally paid less than the ones that work elsewhere.

There are now many prescription glasses from pharmacies, department stores and optician’s shops. There are many people, however, who prefer to buy their glasses online. The online world has changed the way people shop nowadays. Online shopping is, of course, more convenient than any other form of shopping. This is why, even prescription glasses are now being sold by the bulk online.

Your Choices

Purchasing prescription glasses online is far from difficult. You can simply choose the frame and then get the lenses made according to your requirements. When you purchase your eyeglasses on the internet, you can choose from a wider array of styles, colors and designs. Now this is highly advantageous because there are limited choices in most department stores or shops. Buying online can give you more choices on classic and elegant frames as well as designer glasses.

Buying Glasses Online is Easy

Purchasing online is pretty straightforward. It is your duty to provide the details of the prescription and the eye test results. Make sure that these prescription details are not more than two years old.

After providing the details, you can then choose the right frame. You can have the frame sent to your home for fitting or you can upload your picture online so that you can check how the frame would look on you. Whatever option you choose, you will know how you would look in your chosen frame before you make the final purchase. You don’t have to worry because online opticians are also regulated and supervised by the council.

Find out how you can also get discounts for buying online. There could be online coupons or rebates so watch out for those.

One Word of Caution

It is important to note, though, that there could be fake websites here and there so you’ve got to verify a website’s reputation prior to buying anything. They may say that there is nothing to worry about when you do online transactions but, in reality, there always is a risk!

If you’re worried about your credit card information and such, then you might want to use PayPal to buy your prescription glasses. This is one of the safest ways to pay your glasses. Also, it is wise to read reviews in order to know if there are really satisfied customers in the past. Once you’ve verified these things, only then can you finalize your online transaction and then have your glasses delivered to your home.

When you are faced with the difficult task of looking for the right brand of contact lenses for you, you might end up choosing the cheapest that you could find in the market. Though this can save you a few dollars, you might end up with lenses that also have the lowest quality. Remember that choosing cheap contacts doesn’t have to equate to having inferior lenses. What you need to do is to follow these tips and you can win both ways – quality-wise and cost-wise –

Find out if contacts are covered by your insurance: Living in an economic climate that’s always turbulent, it’s best to find out if your insurance can pay for your contact lens. This way, maybe you won’t have to settle for cheap contacts in the first place.

Check contact lens websites for coupons or rebates: There are many popular contact lens manufacturers that offer the most fabulous rebates and coupons. If not, the least that they could offer is free shipping – this, too, is money that you can save.

Check for contact lens product reviews: Apart from cheap prices, you also need to see reviews about the product. This is a good way to compare different lenses side by side. Reviews give you great ideas about pricing and benefits.

Buy in bulk: This is probably an age-old technique of lowering the prices of products that you want to buy. If you are going to use contact lenses for a very long time, you might as well buy them in bulk. You will have bargaining power if you purchase contact lenses in huge numbers.

If, however, you don’t have the budget to buy your lenses in bulk yet, you could collaborate on some buyer forums online. You can also find local buyer forums and see if they want to take your small order and then buy several people’s orders in bulk. Just make sure, though, that the online collaborators you get in touch with are highly reliable. Check their online reputation. Keep in mind that there are many online predators that are out to steal money from customers and you wouldn’t want to be conned by these people.

Use eyeglasses instead: If you really can’t find any dirt-cheap contact lenses at this point because you simply don’t have the budget yet, then you can just resort to using eyeglasses. Cheap contacts may be inexpensive but they are still pricier than eyeglasses so make your choice from the onset.

There are a few leading contact lens companies that also offer trial pairs – you might want to try those, too!

The invention of contact lens is considered a revolutionary ophthalmic advancement. It is, in fact, no less than a miracle. In the past, there were so many problems on this field and most of them were very difficult to manage. The advent of contact lenses gave way to glassless individuals yet it also opened a plethora of abuses such as the use of lenses even without knowing some facts first.

Contact Lenses – The Different Types

Soft contact lenses – these are made of flexible and soft plastics which allow oxygen passage to the cornea. These soft lenses are a lot easier to adjust and are more comfortable than RGP contact lenses. Silicone-hydrogels – the newest materials in this type of contact lens is now able to provide more oxygen to the eye while you’re wearing the lenses.
RPG or Rigid Gas Permeable contact lenses – they are more durable and resistant when compared to soft lenses. They are also more resistant to deposit buildup. They are also known to give a crisper vision. The downside, though, is that they are not as comfortable as their softer counterparts. It may take a few weeks for a person to get used to wearing an RPG lens as compared to just a few days with soft contact lenses.
Extended wear contact lenses – these are available for continuous or overnight wearing. This means that you can use them for 1-6 nights or even up to thirty days. These are often soft lenses since they are also made of flexible plastics which allow the passage of oxygen to the corneas. There isn’t a lot of extended wear contact lens that are approved for overnight usage. This is because it’s important for eyes to have a rest at least for a night following scheduled removals.
Disposable contact lenses – a lot of people prefer to use this type of contact lens now. FDA defines disposable as single usage. Therefore, you need to use a brand new set of lenses each day.

There are some soft contact lenses that manufacturers refer to as disposable but they can actually last from 7-30 days depending on the prescribed wearing period for a particular brand.

Conventional contact lenses – these are used to correct vision problems in the same manner that eyeglasses do. The only difference is that they are in contact with your eyes rather than placed in frames.
Ortho-K contact lenses – are specifically designed to alter the curvature of the cornea to improve the eyes’ focus on objects – at least temporarily.
Plano or decorative contact lenses – these are the ones that you use to change your eye color or simply to scare other people by appearing like a vampire (with bloodshot eyes) or a lady serpent (by wearing reptile-like colored lenses).

Not a lot of people would go to opticians for their eye tests or eye exams. A person will most probably choose to go to other eye doctors rather than the optician. If you are going to have your first eye exam and you go to an optician’s office, you will probably be asked to set an appointment and just come back. Most people just visit opticians when they already have an appointment while others simply don’t visit at all!

Groups of people that commonly visit the optician: The most frequent patients for opticians are the elderly. They are the people that tend to have concerns with their eyesight. It is during the age of 60 or more that a person finally realizes his need to take care of his eyes. It is the responsibility of younger adults to take the elderly to the most competent opticians.

Other than the elderly, the persons that visit the optician’s office are those that have acute eye problems. They also visit frequently because they need more tests and treatments for their eye conditions.

When to go to an optician: There isn’t a particular age that a person must visit an optician. It is advisable, though, that children should be taken to an optician at an early age especially if they are about to go to school. A lot of children experience bad eye sight when they start schooling and this should be checked immediately.

The optician’s job description: Opticians are the ones that examine the written prescriptions in order to determine lens specs. They are the ones that recommend lenses, eyeglass frames, and lens coatings. They are only able to do this after studying prescriptions and the patient’s habits, occupation, and even the facial features.

For people that don’t have prescriptions, a dispensing optician can use a foci meter to measure eyeglass requirements and then duplicate the eyeglasses. A customer’s previous eyeglass record can also be used to remake contact lenses or eyeglasses.

Dispensing opticians are also the ones that prepare the work orders for ophthalmic laboratory technicians. These work orders include prescriptions for lens and information on size, color, material and style. There are some opticians that can grind and insert the eyeglass lenses themselves.

After the eyeglasses have been made, dispensing opticians can also verify that the eyeglasses have been ground according to the specs. If not, they can reshape or bend the frame with the use of pliers or just their hands.

The primary objective of an optician is to make an eyeglass fit the patient comfortably and properly.

A medical doctor focuses on disease-specific diagnoses and treatments while an osteopath concentrates on the structure or function loss on different body parts because of eye problems.

Eye doctors that are classified as osteopaths can also give treatments for visual systems such as surgery, diet improvement, oral medications, and many other kinds of therapies.

The Optometrist

Practitioners of optometry are called eye doctors of optometry or OD. They have been trained to check, diagnose, treat and then manage diseases or disorders of the eyes and the visual system. They have completed pre-professional undergrad education and a 4-year professional education in optometry. There are optometrists that have completed a year of optional residency in certain specializations. Optometrists need not attend medical schooling but like ophthalmologists, they are trained to examine both the internal and external structures of the eyes in order to detect eye diseases and disorders.

It is also the optometrist that can treat vision problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, presbyopia and astigmatism. They can also test one’s ability to focus and coordinate the eyes in color recognition. Though they didn’t go to medical schooling, optometrists are licensed professionals.

The Optician

An optician is an eye health care expert that works together with optometrist or ophthalmologists. He is the one that provides vision services that are related to diagnoses and treatments of eye diseases and vision problems. He gives assistance in the provision of complete patient care. He is there before, during and after eye exams, procedures and optical surgeries.

If you want to become an optician, you need to have a two-year technical degree. This two-year training will give you ample know-how in analyzing and interpreting eye prescriptions. You will also learn to determine the lenses that can meet a patient’s needs. You will be the one to oversee the lens orders and other eye product purchases.

One profession which started in the early 20th century is optometry. This is classified as a health care discipline that has advanced tremendously in the past years. There are now a lot of education programs as well as state laws to adopt the use of this diagnostics and therapeutic drugs in this branch of health care.

Doctors of Optometry

Optometrists (the professionals who practice optometry) are independent health care providers that specialize in visual examination, diagnosis, treatment of certain eye conditions, and the management of these diseases or disorders. They can also diagnose related systemic conditions according to a definition given by The American Optometric Association.

Conditions Treated by Optometry

Disorders pertaining to the anterior segment of the human eye like corneal abrasion, ulcers, glaucoma, infections, and the management of ocular conditions and diseases.
Problems with visual skills such as a person’s ability to shift, align, focus and fixate ocular mechanism such as in driving, reading, computer usage, and attending to hobbies.
A person’s inability to process and interpret visual data like concerns in visualization, perception, and retention in learning tasks.
Reduced vision-body coordination when one interacts in activities such as occupations, sports, and other everyday spatial judgments.
Clarity issues such as farsightedness or complications because of disease, aging process, malfunction or accidents.

All doctors of optometry are well-trained when it comes to ocular and visual conditions. They have been educated to provide primary care in optometry. They have also been state licensed medical experts that were trained to fit lenses and prescribe the needed grades to improve a patient’s vision.

Majority of U.S. State optometrists have license to treat eye illnesses with the use of topical therapeutic agents or oral drugs. They can also professionally perform some types of laser surgery. In most countries abroad, optometrists are asked to refer laser surgery candidates to other health care practitioners like neurologists or ophthalmologists.

Apart from optometry, there are also some optometrists who choose to specialize in the following –

Learning disabilities
Pediatrics
Ocular disease
Contact lenses
Vision therapy
Occupational vision
Geriatrics
Sports vision
Low vision
Rehabilitative vision

These so-called specializations don’t require additional certifications since they are a part of the 4-year optometric curriculum.

Cutting Edge Profession

The diagnostic and technological advances have catapulted the optometric profession to the most admired health care careers. And with attractive compensations, respected status, and flexible hours to boost, this is definitely one of the best careers to be in.
